Physics Powerpoint for Chapter Three

Powerpoint for Chapter Three

Vignettes for Physics

A vignette is a real world example of a physics concept. The source may be:

·      an article from a periodical
·      an article from a newspaper
·      a cartoon
·      a video segment from a tv show, you tube, etc.
·      an experiment that you conduct
·      or make me an offer I cannot refuse

Presentation

·      Make a copy of the source
·      Cite the source MLA style
·      Write a paragraph that summarizes the source
·      Write a paragraph that clearly states at least three new things you learned or understand better after viewing the source

Find an example that illustrates one of the concepts in Chapter Two. Due Monday.

Chemistry Kit Kat Lab

Homework: Complete the lab  report for the Kit Kat Lab.

The following is the procedure for the Kit Kat Lab:

Kit Kat Lab

Density of water = 1.
0 g/cc

1.     Calculate volume of kit kat in cm3
(measure the length, width and height)
2.     Find the mass in grams without wrapper. (Use digital balance)
3.     Make a chart with three columns  - sample, mass, volume.
4.     Cut 1/3 of kit kat bar off
5.     REPEAT steps 1-2 for bigger part
6.     Cut it in half
7.     Repeat step 1-2 for one half.

The following is the format for your lab report:

Title:
Date:
Group members:
Materials:
Procedure:
Data: (table)
Graph: (put on graph paper – calculate slope on graph paper)
Conclusion:
What does the slope represent?
Will they get cat bar sink our float in water?  Why?

Walking on Water from early in the morning to later in the evening

I have seen a swimming pool filled with ooblek on YouTube and on Steve Spangler, but I have never tried it myself. Since there is no clear formula for mixing it, I was a little nervous about it. But I had already committed with my students. (In the summer my landlord had someone leave a wading pool - I asked for it so we could do our walk on water experiment in chemistry).

I had done a rough calculation of how many boxes we needed and had students bring two boxes each. Then I worked out a deal with Wal-mart to get the rest. I had about 160 boxes on hand.

At first we tried mixing a small sample in a five gallon bucket - fail. It was extremely difficult to get it out. Then we decided to just start filling the wading pool with a water hose - dumping in several boxes of ooblek and mixing it by hand.

Ms. Trussell let me borrow several of her students and I drafted two of mine from study hall and we were on our way. After over an hour we had about half of the pool filled.

I had to teach second period physics so I left it with Lexie and Feria to finish.

Right before second period was over, they came smiling to my room and said it was ready.

We tested it before my four chemistry classes came.
Wow.

I told my students I would give ten dollars to the person with the best video. Game on: Here are four of the entries (vote in the comment section by 1, 2, 3, or 4:

And then came my eighth period:

Izzie's mom

Ms. Holmes

And then there was open house and parent's night. I told the parents it was a homework pass if they walked on water
And a Quiz 100 for their child if they stood in the ooblek and sank.
Adrianne's mom

And let us not forget, our leader can walk on water too. (Not pictured to keep up the mystic)!

I have my very own stoplight!

For a several years, I have used the three colors of the traffic light for classroom management.

Red Light - everyone is seated and quiet for ready, set, go's, quizzes, lecture, raise hand for a question

Yellow Light - check with your buddy and classwork, talk in library tones

Green Light - labs, move around the room or outside, even outside voice okay

I have asked for one in the last school where I worked - nada. However, at the best place in America, I ask and I receive. Griffin has promised for a week. Finally on Friday I let him call his dad. Fifteen minutes later this is what I saw:
