  2. Unwrap. '
  3. Measure the diameter in centimeters.
  4. Start licking.
  5. Count how many licks it take to get to the center.
  6. Measure the new diameter in centimeters.
  7. Submit the two diameters and the number of licks in the comment section below.

Holiday Inn College Parks Hits a Homer

I did it!

Since my wife and I went to an Orioles game (check another blog update for that), I am going with the baseball theme.

I have just left the Holiday Inn College Park and say fare you well not goodbye to my new friends there. You hit a homer in my book.

From Milton who greeted me each morning with a smile as I came for my morning coffee adreneline. I came back so much that he got me a bigger styrofoam cup. I told him in jest that he just did not want to see me anymore. Quickly he said you are always welcome and he showed it all four mornings. Thanks Milton.

To Lila who always checked to see if everything was okay and gave me a fist bump. Thanks, Lila.

To Ed and Sharon who took me anywhere I wanted to go in the hotel shuttle and brought me home. Sharon spent 15 minutes at the train station looking for a guest who had called for a ride only to find she had already found another way to the hotel. She said I always try to put myself in someone's shoes who is not familiar with the area and needs some help finding their way. Thanks, Ed and Sharon.

To Kee Kee (pictured above) and Christian who always laughed at my jokes and tried my physics experiments. Both of them were ready to give up on the nickel not flick inertia experiment but I kept encouraging them and they succeeded. You put a piece of index card about five centimeters square on your index finger and put a nickel on top of it and balance it. Then with your other index finger you flick the card not the nickel away. If inertia holds, the nickel stays on your finger. In the pic above, Kee Kee had just succeeded after several attempts. It was great to see the "big eyes" when someone gets it!  Thanks, Kee Kee and Christian.

To Nakeisha who tried to act hard but really had a soft heart and would help you any way she could.

To Sandra in the restaurant and Barbara in human resources who made me feel special like the other staff members. Thanks Sandra and Barbara.

To Jonathan who looked and looked for a restaurant I was trying to find and was determined to help.  He also engaged me in a great conversation when I suggested we should try a cell phone free day. He said he had written a paper on how we are too tied to technology and not to each other. Maybe we could go with a 30 minutes each day for starters. Thanks, Jonathan.

And, most of all, to Kylea, the extraordinary manager. She gave a jump start each day with her pleasant swagger as someone in charge. She is clearly a leader and should have a Kylea School of Leadership to benefit leaders in our world. She was persuasive but not dominating, gentle but not soft, and filled the room with her energy and confidence. Throughout the whole place, you could see her influence of establishing a culture of service and hospitality.

Thank you, Kylea, thank you, all! Like Arnold Schwarzenegger, I will be back.

Catch a Ride on the Science Wonder Craft

Rides available soon down the halls of Whippet Nation.

Two more apprentices

I was visiting in the office and I spotted two teacher's kids. Two more scientists. And the first thing they were in my room exploring the wonders of science.
Pictures say it all. The youngest, Pearson, took the potion - a double dose.

Dose one
Dose two

Swayze got into the plasma globe action.
Look no wires!

I am the room with the music playing through the surround sound - come on down.

KFEE Rocks

Make a wish list to help make the Kosciusko School District world class. Go ahead start now. Send the list to me john.banks@kosciuskoschools.com, and I will make sure the KFEE (Kosciusko Foundation for Excellence in Education) gets it.

And get it they do. I had the pleasure of meeting them at their regular meeting at the Parent Resource Center this past Tuesday night. It was very clear from the start that they had a clear vision for making the Kosciusko School District K-12  the best it can be. If I sound excited, I am.

I made my entrance with my technicolor lab coat (August 5 you will get to see the video).

We are very lucky in the Best Place in America to have the KFEE. Let us support them with our ideas and our service.

Let us also support them with our membership. Teachers, they have our back - it is only $5.00/ month. Community, they have our best interest at heart - only $100.00 buys in to that.
Send me an email for a membership application.

Very soon there will be a website that accepts PayPal. Until then let us get it done here.

Best Place in America (BPIA)

Best Place in America - that is what I said when Coach Kevin let me in the building one night after I had locked my glasses in the building after unloading my fourth truck load from my previous school - it takes a lot of toys to teach science well.

Indeed Kosciusko, affectionately called Kosy, is the Best Place in America for me. From the first interview with Boss, John-Mark Cain, I knew I was welcome and wanted and had a place where my skills and talents and personality would flourish. Then Jenny talked to her friend Jenny and all of a sudden I have an apartment to stay in during the week so I will not have to make an hour and fifteen minute daily commute. BPIA

See my Junior Scientist post for another reason Kosy is the best place in America.

At my first meeting with Claude Julian, who owns an upscale dress shop on the square, we launched into an animated discussion about the importance of academics and how they would help not only the students but also the town to grow. He had already heard about me.  He even flattered me and said I was the tipping point at the high school (a reference to Malcolm Gladwell's book by the same name).  The truth is I am just one of many Kosy Legends at the school as the Twitter page asserts (@khslegends). Whatever the case he has introduced me to most of the business owners on the square. Claude is strongly in corner of excellent academics that will complement the excellent athletics. BPIA

At the T-shirt shop, where I was seeking a new Super B shirt with Kosy colors, I met Janna who was so excited to meet me and had already heard about me. She said she looked forward to the challenge of my physics' class. On my second trip I met Kailyn who was reluctant at first, but I won her over. Now she too is excited about my class. (She has talked her twin brother into it also). BPIA

I have been painting my apartment and took a supper break one night at the Italian restaurant. I aggravated the waitress about not knowing anything about the items on the menu except breakfast. One thing led to another and I found out she was sold on my physics’ class along with the cook, another waiter and someone else they drafted by text. My physics' class is growing by the day. Janna, Kaitlyn, Nicholas, Angel, Rodrigo, Another Angel, Rachel and Kevin. BPIA

At another supper break from painting at Outfielders on the square I met one of my chemistry students, Destiny, who is a cheerleader and daughter of Sheila the owner. And at another break at the same place I met Kiera who plays point guard on the basketball team and will be in my chemistry class. (The secret to good painting is quality breaks!) BPIA

Pretty soon I will have met all of my students before school even starts. As I was saying it was clear from the start that I would flourish here. BPIA.

Long Wait Over

As a part of the Presidential Award for Excellence and Mathematics and Science Teaching application, over two years ago I went through the very long (and frankly enjoyable) process of chronicling my career as a teacher. Part of that process included a live video. Part of it included putting together a portfolio of my accomplishments (my sister used her computer magic to display them in their best possible light).

I submitted the application in May of 2013 and waited for the results.

In October I received a letter congratulating me as one of five state finalists.

That was the last word I heard until I saw a twitter feed (which I had just recently started again) - PAEMST winners announced. Since I had not heard anything else I knew then that I did not make it.

My former colleague at Madison Central, Dr. Betsy Sullivan, received the award along with 101 other state finalists nationally. Congratulations, Betsy!

Later I checked my old school email and found out that I did get a Dear John letter.

Of all the things I have done over the years as an educator, this proved the most frustrating and disappointing.  Not because I did not get the award but because I spent almost two years in never never land with no communication.

Maybe that was best. I learned a lot about patience and just turning things over to powers greater than I.
